Matt Downs is a commercial leader with more than 25 years of experience helping industrial organizations achieve sustainable growth through strategic business development, engineering collaboration, and disciplined commercial execution.
Drawing on a foundation in engineering, technical sales, and EPC project delivery, Matt partners with industrial owners to align business objectives with engineering solutions that create measurable business value throughout the capital project lifecycle.
Throughout his career, Matt has supported customers across the refining, petrochemical, LNG, power generation, manufacturing, and upstream, midstream, and downstream oil and gas industries. His experience includes commercial leadership, strategic account development, market expansion, customer engagement, and helping organizations identify and develop complex capital project opportunities. He has also contributed to multiple startup organizations, led strategic growth initiatives, and helped introduce innovative technologies into industrial markets.
As Director of Business Development for GATE Energy's Project Delivery organization, Matt leads strategic business development initiatives across refining, petrochemical, LNG, power, and industrial markets. He works closely with industrial owners to identify front-end project opportunities, develop long-term customer relationships, and align GATE's engineering and project delivery capabilities with customer business objectives. His focus is on creating value early in the project lifecycle by helping customers develop successful projects before execution begins.
Matt's leadership philosophy is grounded in trust, systems thinking, and disciplined execution. He believes sustainable growth is achieved by understanding customer challenges, building strong relationships, empowering people, and developing organizational systems that consistently deliver measurable business value.
Matt is currently pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration at Texas State University, where his research focuses on Organizational Systems Performance and Sustainable Growth. He earned an MBA in Leadership from the Jack Welch Management Institute and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management and Applied Engineering Technology from Texas A&M University–Kingsville. His professional development also includes studies in Business Analytics through Texas Tech University and Six Sigma Black Belt training.
