Roxar HS

Quartz Crystal Permanent Downhole Gauge

Product Description

BlueFin’s Roxar HS gauge is the latest generation of gauge and is designed for the most extreme well conditions. The gauge makes use of Quartz crystals for measurement which provides accurate low drift readings of the bottomhole temperature and pressure year after year.

The Roxar HS gauge makes use of Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) technology. This enables the gauge to go well beyond the traditional temperature limits of hybridized electronics. The SOI technology further enhances the physical capabilities with respect to a significant reduction in size, better shock resistance and increased data rate.

Y-blocks are used to combine multiple gauges onto a single cable. Electron beam welds join the HS and Y-block into a single unit, minimizing leak paths and increasing system reliability.

Benefits & Applications

  • The sealed preassembled unit reduces potential leak paths by nearly 90% compared to previous generation gauges. The preassembled unit also significantly reduces rig time spent on assembling gauges.

  • SOI electronics provides major improvements with respect to system reliability, communications stability, high temperature performance, expected lifetimes.

  • All Roxar gauges are calibrated by a third-party calibration laboratory (procedure available on request), accredited to NS-EN ISO/IEC 17025 to ensure the accuracy of readings and maintain the highest standard of performance.

  • HS Gauges are qualified for a lifetime of 6 years at 437°F. Using the Arrhenius Equation, lifetime doubles each time when reducing temperature by 10°C. This leads to exponentially higher lifetime expectations at lower temperatures.

Roxar Design

The Roxar HS gauge is designed to operate in extreme environments including high temperature, high pressure wells of any kind. Roxar had already been developing and installing gauges for 18 years prior to the release of the Roxar HS gauge and used this experience and knowledge to its advantage in the development of the Roxar HS System, producing a gauge with a design life estimated to exceed 50 years at 150°C.

Roxar HS gauges are pre-assembled and tested at the factory in Norway, they are then electron beam welded into a single sealed unit which is shipped to location ready to be attached to the cable. This sealed preassembled unit reduces potential leak paths by nearly 90% compared to previous generation gauges. The preassembled unit also significantly reduces rig time spent on assembling gauges.

The Roxar HS gauge is built around the versatile Roxar Downhole Interface Module (RODIM™), in which all downhole electronics are integrated in a single Multi- Chip-Module (MCM), reducing the amount of space required for electronics and decreasing the size of the gauge. The RODIM is also used as a generic network node in the Roxar Integrated Network (IDN), enabling other Roxar measurements such as Watercut, Density, Velocity and interfacing to 3rd party equipment and sensors.

Calibration & Lifetime

All Roxar gauges are calibrated by a third-party calibration laboratory (procedure available on request), accredited to NS-EN ISO/IEC 17025 to ensure the accuracy of readings and maintain the highest standard of performance.

Roxar has been performing long term tests to ascertain real lifetime and failure mode data since 2005. In an independent test run by StatoilHydro, the Roxar HS gauge was the only gauge to survive the testing process and stay within published specifications with regards to drift and accuracy. The HS Gauge has been qualified by exposing it to 225°C for 6 years. Using the Arrhenius Equation, lifetime doubles each time when reducing temperature by 10°C. This leads to exponentially higher lifetime expectations at lower temperatures. HS Gauges are hence qualified for an expected lifetime of:

  • uHPHT (< 200°C): Exceeding 25 Years

  • HPHT (< 150°C): Exceeding 50 Years
